ELM327 WiFi Wireless OBD2 Review: A Deep Dive into Software and Functionality

An ELM327 WiFi OBD2 scanner offers a cost-effective solution for vehicle diagnostics. This review explores the software options and functionalities of this device, focusing on setup, code reading, data analysis, and the impressive recording feature of TouchScan software.

Software Options for ELM327 WiFi

The ELM327 typically comes with a CD containing various software options. However, the free version, ScanTool.net for Windows v1.13, offers limited functionality, primarily allowing for code scanning, clearing, and basic sensor data display.

A more powerful alternative is TouchScan by ScanTool.net LLC. While the demo version is limited to 14 days, it provides a comprehensive suite of features, including diagnostic code retrieval and clearing, sensor data display, real-time stats, freeze frame data, vehicle information, a customizable dashboard, and—most notably—the ability to record and playback test drives.

Connecting and Using TouchScan with ELM327

TouchScan simplifies the connection process with its AutoDetect feature, automatically scanning COM ports and baud rates to establish communication with the ELM327. In a test case, the software successfully connected using COM5 at 115200 baud with the ISO 15765-4 CAN 11 bit protocol.

Once connected, the dashboard provides real-time gauge readings, reflecting changes in engine parameters.

The customizable dashboard allows users to select and display specific gauges tailored to their needs.

Diagnostic Trouble Codes and Freeze Frame Data

To test the diagnostic capabilities, a MAF sensor was unplugged, triggering the check engine light (CEL), traction control light (TRAC), and vehicle stability control (VSC) light. TouchScan successfully identified the corresponding trouble codes: P0102 and P0113.

The Freeze Frame Data feature captured a snapshot of the engine’s state when the code was set, including engine temperature and time since starting.

Test Drive Recording and Playback

The standout feature of TouchScan is its recording capability. A 12-minute test drive was recorded and later played back, allowing for a detailed analysis of vehicle data as if the drive were happening in real-time.

This functionality provides invaluable insights into vehicle performance under various driving conditions.

Additional Information Screens in TouchScan

TouchScan provides a range of information screens beyond the dashboard and diagnostic features, offering detailed vehicle data and parameters.

It’s crucial to disconnect from the device within the TouchScan software before closing the application to release the COM port. The full version of TouchScan is available for a reasonable price with unlimited upgrades, offering a compelling solution for comprehensive vehicle diagnostics. The ELM327 WiFi OBD2 scanner, combined with powerful software like TouchScan, provides a valuable and affordable tool for troubleshooting and understanding vehicle performance.
