Unleash the Beast: Ford OBD2 Crate Engines and Control Packs

The Ford “Godzilla” 7.3L engine is a powerhouse, but to truly unleash its potential, you need the right control system. Our OBD2 compatible crate engine control packs, based on the E8G ECU, provide a seamless solution for integrating this beast into your project. This guide dives deep into our offerings for Ford Obd2 Crate Engines, covering everything from fuel requirements to performance expectations.

Fuel Requirements: Premium Power Demands Premium Fuel

Our control packs for the Godzilla engine are calibrated for premium fuel (93 octane) at 60 psi. This is crucial for optimal performance and engine longevity. Using lower octane fuel can lead to severe engine damage. If 93 octane isn’t available in your area, we offer 87 octane calibrations. Alternatively, our OB256 calibration tool allows custom spark advance adjustments.

Engine Control: The E8G ECU – Italian Engineering Meets American Muscle

The heart of our system is the Italian-engineered E8G ECU. Initially designed for a renowned sports car manufacturer, it’s been updated with on-board data recording and full sequential control, even for 16-injector Godzilla engines. Compatible with both early and late (2023+) versions, the E8G boasts OEM-level features, including flex-fuel control.

Wiring Harnesses: Military-Grade Reliability for Your Godzilla Engine

Our Livonia, Michigan-built wiring harnesses utilize high-tech, aircraft-grade ETFE wire. This incredibly durable wire withstands temperatures from -85°F to 392°F, resists chemicals, and boasts a thin profile for lightweight, compact harnesses. OEM connectors and terminals ensure perfect fitment for sensors, injectors, coils, and more. A redesigned Y-split simplifies installation, and the extended harness allows ECU placement in the cabin or engine compartment.

The included power supply harness, also built with ETFE wire, features three 30A fused relays: engine control, fuel pump, and a spare for accessories like a cooling fan.

Intake Manifold Absolute Pressure (TMAP) Sensor: Monitoring Engine Load

A crucial component for performance tuning is included: a TMAP sensor with a fitting adapter for easy installation without drilling. This sensor measures intake manifold pressure, providing critical data for precise engine load calculations.

Throttle Body Compatibility: Versatility for Your Build

Our system supports a wide range of throttle bodies, including cable-operated with analog position sensors, drive-by-wire with analog sensors, and drive-by-wire with digital SENT sensors.

Control Pack Options: Tailored to Your Performance Goals

We offer various control pack options to match your specific needs:

Kit 1 (Naturally Aspirated): Includes the E8G ECU, engine harness with OBD II port, power supply harness, a naturally aspirated engine calibration, a wideband lambda sensor, a 1 bar TMAP sensor, and an OBD II link.

Kit 1A (Recommended): Adds a second wideband lambda sensor for bank-to-bank fuel control.

Kit 1B (Tuner): Includes Kit 1A plus the OB256 communication kit for full ECU calibration access.

Kit 2 (Boosted): Designed for turbocharged or supercharged engines. Includes the E8G ECU, engine harness, power supply harness, a base boost calibration (7 psi, 760 hp), a wideband lambda sensor, a 3 bar TMAP sensor, and an OBD II link.

Kit 2A (Recommended): Adds a second wideband lambda sensor for bank-to-bank fuel control.

Kit 2B (Tuner): Includes Kit 2A plus the OB256 communication kit.

Choosing the Right Kit and After-Sales Support

Contact us to discuss your engine build and select the appropriate kit. Minor ECU tune adjustments might be needed based on your chosen components. You can rent the OB256 tool for a week or purchase it for ongoing access to all ECU parameters. We offer 12 months of free phone and email support and a one-time ECU tune adjustment with the OB256 kit.

Installation: Simplicity Meets Performance

Installing our control pack is straightforward:

  1. Install the TMAP sensor adapter.
  2. Connect the engine harness.
  3. Connect the throttle pedal.
  4. Connect the power supply harness.
  5. Connect the fuel lines and set fuel pressure.
  6. Connect the exhaust system.

Start your engine – no initial calibration is required.

Performance Expectations: Dyno-Proven Results

Our calibrations maximize performance, driveability, and fuel economy. Expect significant power gains with our standard crate engine calibration:

  • Maximum Power: 500 hp @ 5,800 RPM
  • Maximum Torque: 560 lb-ft @ 4,000 RPM

These figures are based on STP (Standard Temperature and Pressure) testing.

OBD II and CAN Data Export: Comprehensive Data Monitoring

The E8G ECU exports comprehensive data via OBD II and CAN, including engine RPM, manifold air pressure, temperatures, throttle position, lambda values, and more. This data can be used for monitoring, diagnostics, and tuning. On-board data recording (64 MB) is also available with the optional communication kit.

Advanced Features: Traction Control, Launch Control, and More

Our system supports advanced features like traction control, launch control, drag race controls, gear shift control for manual transmissions, and compatibility with automatic transmission controllers and instrument clusters.
