How Does WiFi OBD2 Work with Bootmod3?

The MHD WiFi adapter, typically used with the MHD tuning platform, has been found to be compatible with Bootmod3 (BM3). This allows BM3 users to flash tunes wirelessly, eliminating the need for the more expensive BM3 WiFi module and the ENET cable. This discovery offers a more affordable and convenient flashing solution.

The process involves downloading the desired map to your phone via the BM3 mobile app first, as the WiFi connection with the MHD adapter doesn’t allow for on-the-fly map downloads. Select the “Flash” option, then choose “Download Now and Flash Later.” Once the map is downloaded, connect your phone to the MHD adapter’s WiFi network. The BM3 app will then recognize the vehicle connection.

Flashing times with the MHD adapter are comparable to using the ENET cable, taking just a few minutes for a complete map flash. During the process, a message stating “cannot download the map from the BM3 cloud” may briefly appear around the 3% mark. This is normal and will disappear quickly, allowing the flash to continue uninterrupted. Testing confirms successful flashing to both Stage 2 OTS maps and custom E85 maps.

This cross-compatibility provides a significant cost saving for BM3 users. Instead of purchasing the dedicated BM3 WiFi module for around $150, the MHD adapter offers the same functionality at approximately $70. The wireless connection also simplifies the flashing process, removing the need for cable connections.
